Terms of service

viewmygpx is a free, browser-based GPX viewer, converter, and editor. By using the site you agree to the simple terms below. We try to keep this page short and plain — there is no sign-up ceremony, no fine-print clickwrap, and no compulsory account.

What viewmygpx is

The site at viewmygpx.com publishes a browser-based tool for opening, viewing, converting, and editing GPX files, alongside a working reference for the GPX format and for sending GPX files to specific mapping and fitness platforms. Everything on the site is free to use. There are no premium tiers and no features locked behind a paywall.

Free, as-is

The tool and the documentation are provided as-is, without warranties of any kind. We try to keep things working — the viewer parses any valid GPX 1.0 or 1.1 file we have tested with, the conversions round-trip cleanly, the editor preserves Garmin extensions — but software has bugs and the web has outages. If something is broken, please tell us.

We do not promise uptime, specific feature availability, or compatibility with any particular file. Use the tool, save your work, and verify the output before relying on it for anything important.

Your files belong to you

You own every GPX file you open on viewmygpx. We do not claim ownership, license, or any other right to your file content. We do not see your files at all — the parsing, rendering, conversion, and editing all happen in your browser, as documented in the privacy policy.

Files you download from the converters and editor are derived from your own input. They belong to you. The open-format outputs (KML, KMZ, CSV, GeoJSON) follow the conventions of their published standards (OGC KML 2.3, IETF GeoJSON RFC 7946) so they remain portable to any other tool that reads them.

Sample GPX files

The dozen sample GPX files at /sample-gpx-files/ are released under the Creative Commons Zero (CC0) public-domain dedication. You may use them for any purpose, commercial or otherwise, with no attribution required. They are synthetic — plausible for the named regions but not tied to any real recorded ride, hike, or trail. Do not navigate by them.

Site content

The writing, code, and design of the site itself are the work of the people behind viewmygpx. You are welcome to quote excerpts with attribution and a link back. We do not grant a license to copy pages wholesale to other sites; that's usually a sign of low-effort SEO scraping that hurts both originals and search results.

The site uses several open-source libraries (Next.js, React, Leaflet, fflate, and others). Each library is used under its own license, included in the published source code.

Acceptable use

Use the site for what it is built for: opening, viewing, converting, and editing GPX files. A few things to avoid:

  • Do not abuse the site (automated scraping that hammers the CDN, attempts to attack the infrastructure, denial-of-service traffic). We may block traffic that does this.
  • Do not use the site to do something illegal where you are. Local law applies to local use.
  • Do not misrepresent viewmygpx as your own product. The site is ours; cloning the brand is not okay.

Use at your own risk in the field

The viewer is a visualization and conversion tool. It is not a navigation system. A GPX file shows where someone went or planned to go; the route may be inaccurate, outdated, closed, or unsafe. In remote terrain, do not rely on a single GPX file alone — bring a paper map, a compass, an offline navigation app, water, and tell someone where you are going. The full caveats are in the disclaimer.

We are not liable for outcomes that result from using a GPX file you previewed or converted on viewmygpx. The tool processes the file you give it; the route is on you.

Third-party links and platforms

The site links to many third-party platforms — Strava, Komoot, AllTrails, Garmin Connect, Google Maps, Google Earth, OpenStreetMap, TopoGrafix, OGC, IETF, W3C, and many others. When you follow a link, you are subject to that destination's terms and privacy policy. We do not control them and are not responsible for their content or their policies.

Updates to these terms

When we change something material on this page — a new policy, a funding change, an ad-network introduction — we update this page in place. The change takes effect when the page is published. There is no special notification beyond the published page.
